…Basics

Not long ago, when attending your first scrapbook class, or even a big scrapbooking retreat, you would be expected to show up with "The Basics". Lists for newbies would be provided so that you appeared to know what they were talking about (if not how to use the basics).

Basics at that point were -

  • A good pair of scissors and a paper trimmer
  • A ruler (preferably metal edged)
  • A black pen
  • Wet adhesive
  • Dry adhesive
  • Basic cardstock - white being a good stand-by colour.
  • Oh, and your photographs.

If this was years ago, the Basics would also include such things as shape templates and a pencil.

The Basics to Scrapbooking list was added to with the years. Most people turned up with chalks, and eyelets and brads and appropriate tools to hammer around and make a lot of noise, and make the community table you were sharing jump up and down just as you were about to draw a nice straight line.

Nowadays the Basics are added with gay abandon, dependent on what type of class you are turning up to. Because scrapbooking has taken such diverse lines in various styles, and techniques -

To the above, at least be prepared to provide -

  • Paper needles, and thread
  • Punches (yes, corner punches have had a comeback)
  • Definately Ink Pads - in lovely muddy browns to age cardstock with
  • Paper Piercer
  • Various different types of glues including glue dots of various sizes
  • Some kind of whopping great die cut tool (with covetted letter plates - especially new ones no one else has, and will win you kudos if you’re prepared to lend them during the class)
  • Probably some pre-prepared (ie printed out earlier) computer journaling to attach to the page.

Or try getting back to basics in scrapbooking, and only use a paper cutting device, some glue and a pen on a few bits of cardstock. Now, that would be sheer retro.
