Conversation with a five year old:

Me: So what is the most special perfect Christmas you would like?
She: The best Christmas thing?
Me: Yes. What is best about Christmas?
She: Getting presents.
[Pause.]
Me: Er, isn’t there more than that? How about the tree, and going to Grandmas? What about the nice food? And the lights? You like the lights, right? Aren’t some of those things what makes Christmas perfect?
[Another pause.]
She: No, I just really like opening the presents, Mum. Is that what I can draw?
Me: [Sigh] Okay, draw that then, but at least put in the tree - and mummy and daddy too.
