Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at 12:14PM I saw this on Nick Daw’s blog. I’ve not time to tag, as I’m off to work, but if you’re reading this, consider yourself tagged for this meme.
The list below comes from the American Big Read survey of the 100 most popular books there. The list differs somewhat from the UK Big Read list. And I must admit, there are some books on this list with authors I’ve never heard of. And many of the geniune classics I admit to have read, were through school reading requirements many moons ago, or my teenage years when I was an avid collector and reader of all books.
For me - 47 read out of 100, almost 50% but if I could add some from the UK reading list, I’d be possibly better off. The UK list, for instance, includes a Stephen King, several by Terry Pratchett and The Thorn Birds. It’s missing my favourite NZ book classic, The Bone People, and I can’t believe it’s not got The Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 14 3/4, surely the forerunner for all of the diary-type novels we have recently, including Bridget Jone’s Diary. The UK list also includes several more I have my eye on reading including such current reads as The Alchemist.
I think another good question one might like to ask oneself (if being brutally honest) is - out of those classics marked as having read, how many did you hate?
1) Bold those you have read.
2) Italicise those you intend to read.
3) [Bracket] the books you LOVE.
4) Reprint this list on your own blog.
