April - June 2007

Find the Digital Purchases and Equivalent Charity Donations Here

This is a personal challenge for myself, to allow my addiction to buying digital scrapbooking stash to be turned into something given back to local and worldwide charities and sponsorships.

Background:

I realise that I am a reasonably lucky person, in that my fultime employment currently allows me the luxury of spending on digital scrapbooking kits and elements. I try to be good, and only purchase during sales, and when discount coupons are available to me, but like many a scrapbooker - I can’t stop myself from buying up lots of supplies to feed this addictive hobby. And because I make a good pay packet, the amounts of digital stash I am capable of buying up can sometimes even make me realise how ludicrously addictive it sometimes can be. I don’t buy make-up or clothes. I don’t own more than six pairs of shoes. I don’t make up for things with food. What I do do - is buy digital scrapbooking stash.

Many digital designers and stores now sponsor charities also, but these are usually towards charities within the U.S.A, and without any ability to support more local charities. For a while I was frustrated in this, and contemplated ways that more international charities might have a focus. But I am not a digital designer myself, I am a consumer of those wares, and my craft, and that of charity support seemed somehow broken.

Until I suddenly realised that there is nothing stopping me linking my own craft with local charities,

and in doing this, I have a set of objectives and challenges for me personally -

Objectives:

  1.  During the months of April through to June, I will match pound for pound the amount I spend on purchasing new digital stash with money spent on any charity or sponsorship I please.
  2. This will make me look more thoroughly at my expenditure on digital stash, to make every last cent/pence count in my total budget.
  3. A percentage of each month’s digital expenditure (30%) will also be saved aside for that rainy day at some point in the future when I may no longer be earning money fultime, and will not be able to buy much digital stash at all.
  4. I will share my stash purchases and equal charity purchases honestly with myself on this blog.
  5. This will be fun!

Main Fundraising

Although my charity selections are reasonably personal and somewhat random on the day, I have created a Just Giving fundraising site, to allow me to add any bits of money I may find to the one charity. For this I have selected the Guide Dog Foundation, because I really want to have been able to sponsor a Blind Dog Puppy (and hope to do so in the future). My target of £1000 is overly ambitious for the three months, but if you feel like encouraging me in this personal objective, please feel free to add to the Just Giving pot (and as a digital designer, creating lots of nice new stash to entice my retail dollar to). Below is the badge to the Just Giving webpage for this sponsorship.
