For the sake of the Virtual Book Tour and Angie Pedersen’s visit here tonight, I am reprinting this review today.

This is by no means a full review on the new Book Of Us, by Angie Pedersen. Because I have a couple of layouts published in this book I fear that I will not be independent enough to give a quantified opinion on Angie’s latest book in her series. The series commenced with the now famous Book of Me, continued with Growing Up Me, a book about encapturing children’s Me albums. And now we have the much bigger Book of Us.

Angie’s normal format continues with this idea book - in use of textured photographic backgrounds to the pages, and each chapter having copious quotes on the subject. I love the quotes out of these books - for me the text and quotes are often more inspiring than the actual sample layouts used.

One of the first quotes I found on the first chapter brought me back to earth last night, when I opened this book. After struggling a little with my own blog writing this quote helped -

“The instruction we find in books is like fire. We fetch it from our neighbors, kindle it at home, communicate it to others, and it becomes the property of all” - Voltaire.

Although Angie used it to conceptualise how a scrapbook is indeed our way of writing to the world my interpretation was into the 21st century, where my own scrapbook writing is going out to the world over the internet. My designs and scrapbooks are just another way of kindling my ideas.

So, what’s different between the Book of Me, and the Book of Us? Angie explains it well in her first chapter - The Book of Us celebrates our relationships. Relationships are about intimacy and connections between people. It’s a two-way, cause and effect process. Whereas a Book of Me may deal with your feelings on being a mother, a Book of Us will look at it from both directions - how you feel about being a mother, and how your child feels about being your child.

The book’s chapters deal with different subject matters (or types of relationships) - from our history, theme albums, perspectives, our celebrations, our love, family, or groups. There are also two end chapters on circle journals and gift albums. In fact, the entire book has numerous mini or gift albums through it. These are absolutely lovely and highly case-able as ideas and in format. The mini albums, tag albums, accordian albums, smaller journals featured in the Book of Us fit well with the concept, when trying to document relationships.

As an aside, mini or circle journals are big lately. Pinecone Press is bringing out a Circle Journal book later in the year. Many scrapbookers are looking to smaller concept albums, or mini albums as a quicker but worthwhile way of documenting things like relationships, or as gifts. I know I do. It’s always sad to see these gifts being given away, but in doing so we are moving our communication channels onwards and out of our personal family albums. Scrapbooking is going out to the world.

Layouts chosen in the Book of Us range from simple layouts on themes to complex and extremely beautiful layouts. This is all subjective to my own liking of styles etc, but Angie has managed to select a wide range of differing styles, and not just layouts which some might think of as being advanced. The ABC albums and other simpler layouts are do-able, even for newbie scrappers.

I think I am most impressed with the care and production quality taken over the photography of the published layouts and mini albums. Photos are taken close enough for you to read all the journaling with ease. Details show, and the colour is exactly right - at least for my own layouts featured.

Angie changes format a little from her earlier books. In those she provided a lot of internet links for additional resources for each chapter. Those links are no longer published in the book, but instead on her website, One Scrappy Site, under the Links area. This is perhaps a good idea, considering the volatility of links nowadays. At least dead links can be taken off her website when encountered. The links resources from Angie’s site look helpful in themselves. For instance, under the Circle Journal theme, there are article links explaining what a cj is, and how to set one up, and several links to cj galleries.

Even without these links, the book is 150 pages long, and includes many interesting subjects, ideas to use, and fabulous layouts and mini albums. This book really should be in every scrapbooker’s library. You can use it to break a scrapper’s block cycle, by ducking into the book at any point to apply the ideas. Or you can create an entire Book of Us themed album using the ideas within.

To finalise this, on a more personal basis - I simply enjoy the ability to read into other scrapbooker’s lives here. I’m sure I’m not the only one who stops at a layout and reads the actual journaling. The Book of Us not only shows that journaling in fine detail, but the photographs on the layouts are interesting too. My layouts in this book show some less detailed shots of myself (thank goodness Angie chose to put a belt across my own mugshot), and my family. Whilst my husband and I went through the book last night, I made a comment towards someone else’s layout, which has two reasonably large photos of her partner. My musings were how lovely all these men must be in real life, to allow their scrapbooking partners to publish what perhaps may not be their best portrait photos out to the world like that. My hubbie nods agreeably, for the sake of making me happy.

to someone’s life. I think it appeals to the voyeur in all of
us. As you read blogs, you get a sense of people’s schedules,
priorities, personalities, and senses of humor. You come to
realize how much, perhaps, you have in common. You may not agree
with everything that’s posted in a particular blog, but you come to
appreciate their insights, or their candor, or their approach to life
in general. I know that I appreciate reading blogs that have me
nodding my head in confirmation — I can relate to their entry topics,
or their insights on situations. When that happens, I feel more
“normal” — like if at least this person has also experienced or
thought this, at least I’m not alone.

That’s part of what appeals to me so much about this Virtual Book Tour,
or at least part of the results I’m looking for. I want people to
read my challenges, chat transcripts, and blog entries and not see a
“celebrity scrapbooker”. While I am working to “make a name” for
myself, it’s very important to me for people to realize that I’m so
very much like them. That’s already been apparent in this first
week of the tour — Thursday night’s chat at ScrapsAhoy had to be
rescheduled because of a choir concert, and I wasn’t able to blog here
this morning because of a soccer tournament. As Jen at ScrapsAhoy
said to me that morning, “We’re all about ‘Life Happens’”.
Because it does. “Mom-stuff”, family duties, and work obligations
often pull us in so many directions that our perceptions and priorities
become skewed. It still happens to me.

But my hope is that if people see me as “one of them”, it might make my
message more meaningful because they can relate to it. I struggle
with the same issues of not enough time, too much to do, self-doubt,
and fatigue that so many other women do. But since I’ve made the
philosophy behind my books a priority in my scrapbooking, maybe other
women can see that it’s do-able. And my hope is that this book
tour will reflect that.

I also want this book tour to reflect my priority for being
approachable. I have been scrapbooking for almost seven years,
and have been successful in marketing myself into a career I’ve created
for myself basically from scratch. Yes, technically I am a
“world-famous best-selling author”, but if you’ve ever taken my classes
you know I often make light of that. I happen to have some good
ideas, and love sharing them with people. I’m a good teacher, and
my classes are really fun and informative. I guess I’m a bit of a
show-off at heart, so if I have an idea or
resource that helps someone with a scrapbooking question, then that
allows me to feed that vice a bit.

But I make a point to not let my success change my own perception of my
“worth”, in comparison to anyone else. I have experience and
resources that I want to share with anyone who will listen, so I love
it when people ask questions! This book tour is the perfect forum
for that — I’ve gotten some really interesting questions in chats and
message boards, and in return, people get the information they
need. Win-win, in my book! I want this book tour to reflect
that I’m really not all about being a “scrapbooking celebrity” — I am
easy to talk to, and am very happy to answer questions. I will do
my best to offer insights and give straight, honest answers to help you
make your scrapbooks more meaningful. My books do that in print
form; this tour offers a more accessible, immediate venue of feedback.

Putting these concepts out there, that I’m just a “normal”
wife/mother/woman like you who’s happy to chat about scrapbooking — is
not something I’ve been able to communicate so specifically on other
stops on this tour. That’s what I love about a blog — you can
put your whole heart into a message, write it all out until it says
exactly what you want to say. I guess that’s actually what I love
about scrapbooking, too! :)
A lot of the Memes being challenged as virus ideas out there in the scrapblogging world are starting to be taken up as concepts for journalling or even scrapbooking within the Us realm. Secondly, a lot of the scrapbooking blogs out there are sharing so much of our lives that it’s a learning lesson for others (like me). The world is getting smaller - it’s no longer about them and me, it’s more about finding those areas in our lives that we can share and support. It’s about “Us”.

Enclyclopedias and Albums about Us

This is Bree Carlson’s blog (Creating is My Life). Bree is the founder of the excellent ScrapMaps website, but also is now facing a time tackling childhood leukemia with her son. Her blog is giving her the ability to write about this huge event in her and her family’s life, but scrapbooking is giving her the ability to create through it. As we know, Creating provides emotional healing as well. Take a look at Bree’s new album that she’s starting to create - a Life with Cancer Album. She has taken the concept of the Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life, and is using it to deal with her feelings during this time in her life, whilst creating a memory album for it also.

Although her concept of using the ideas for the Encylopedia of an Ordinary Life are towards her own feelings over the event (surely every scrapbook album is pretty much one person’s - the scrapbooker herself - interpretation of family life), this album is going to be bigger than that. This will surely include her son’s and other family member’s feelings and discoveries through this process. She is making a Book of Us.

Sharing a passion (or a problem)

This is one of Anne McLellan’s blogs - One Digital Scrapper. It’s a great blog, and she finds the most beautiful digital kits within it. But she also shares a bit of her personal passions in life with we readers. Check out her review of the free Rakscrap’s kit for Autismn-Awareness week Anne’s son suffers from this disability, and in her blog entry she shares a lot of knowledge on this. Anne is not the only one with this disability in her family life. 3 different designers from Rakscraps share this with her, and if you check out Ali Edward’s blog you will notice all her links to websites dealing with Autism also.

And here is my rather shambolic call for help when the cliquiness in this industry just got to me a smidgeon , and I ended up finding a focus group to help me celebrate my square=pededness. Yes, this seems so minor now, when dealing with the health problems encountered and shared by others above. But it was national stress-awareness week also, and everything in this world has a purpose, and this was mine - I needed a short-sharp burst of self-truth, and more particularly - self-awareness and acceptance. Like many, it’s far to easy to focus outside of yourself for a long time (especially when a mother) and blogging is so introspective that you suddenly come upon yourself all over again - and when you’re least expecting or wanting it.

Follow the Meme

Take a look at the tracks through the Signature Challenge started by Tina Barriscale and through so many other blogs. By following these challenges, and linking into them, the scrapbooking community (at least of bloggers) is forming an even tighter Us-ness or grouping. What might be interesting is if this particular popular meme challenge amongst scrapbooking bloggers actually moved outside of this cultural group and we saw other bloggers exploring the idea.

For more on the Memes and associated challenges see the additional reading linked to below.

Memes into Us-Us’s (UsUs)

Many of the formations of both the Book of Me and the Memes themselves - lists, journaling challenges, photographic challenges are and should be taken out to further realms - that of the family or Us. The Book of Us deals with several different formations of groups of people - crop groups, women’s groups, families, extended-families and how we fit into these, and can celebrate these. Using such Memes or journaling topics can benefit in designing and creating scrapbook layouts which celebrate the Us’s we find ourselves within. Use the list topics (100 things about me or To-Do lists even, and throw them to your Us-people - perhaps as an interview, or for them to fill in also. Invite them onto your blog as a guest blogger, and see what makes them tick. Then scrapbook it.

So, are Memes relevant to the Book of Us? And are there other trends in the blogging world which may be beneficial to the scrapbooking community? I think so. What do you think?

Blogging is big, blogging is trendy, blogging is the latest craze for many scrapbookers. But before that was The Book of Me.

What’s interesting about all of this, from my perspective, is how Blogging is normally so introspective. There are so many scrap-bloggers out there getting into the whole journaling aspect, and recording their lives over the World Wide Web. But blogging, and the Book of Me were out there long before this circular journey that many scrapbookers are now seeming to make. Whilst the Book of Me was espousing the fact that we, as scrapbookers, should be including layouts or pages about “Me”, blogging in it’s many forms was doing just that - virtually. A case in point is the Me-Me trends through blogs.

For Additional Information On Memes, read this journal entry today.

Much of the Memes journey for bloggers is simply finding out about yourself. In fact, the 100 Things about Me Sub-meme was pretty much something that Angie proposed several years ago. Here’s a link to my own 100 things layout which I created years ago now - and I bet you have one too. Like scrapbooking, blogging (or e-scrapbooking) is point in time. My 100 Things list of a few years ago needs updating now. The 100 Things About Me List that I linked to in the above Memes discussion, was created a few weeks back - and I really want to change some of them again, as my life has changed in perspective once more of late.

There are other blogging trends which link directly into many of the subjects that we found in the Book of Me.

Take a look at some of these trends here

These goal lists, to-do lists and the interesting Enclyclopedia of an Ordinary Life as a concept seem to be pretty much up there when dealing with introspective layouts such as those on ourselves.

So - is blogging a re-discovery of many of the proposals from the original Book of Me? It certainly helps maintain that introspection necessary to venture into creating layouts about myself. Perhaps this is worth a discussion in itself…

Let’s start off with the Book of Me, which has become such an institution in the scrapbooking world around us. How long has this book been out now and what initially inspired you to write it?

I started working on my own Book of Me album in January 2001. I was going through some challenging times personally. I was facing a sort of an identity crisis. Actually, sort of the opposite. I knew exactly who I was. I was a wife and mother. Period. But as I looked at my days, I didn’t see anything that anyone else couldn’t do. There was nothing significant about me being the one that was doing the laundry and the dishes, the grocery shopping and errands, the cooking… I wasn’t pleased with this perception of myself, so I decided to create a scrapbook to remind me of the good in my life, and all the gifts I had to offer. As I showed it to my friends, I saw that they were almost startled — so many of my friends had never thought of doing a page about themselves, let alone actually done one. Just like me, they were also absent from their own albums.

As much as I enjoyed the process of creating my Book of Me, I realized other scrappers might be searching for ways to create such a book for themselves. I wanted to help them by providing a roadmap for them to follow, compiling all the resources I had drawn on. So, this book was born. The Book of Me has been out for two years now: it’s in its fifth printing and has sold over 50,000 copies worldwide. Hundreds of local scrapbooking stores, many in countries outside the U.S., now offer classes based on The Book of ME.

Tell us a little more about the Book of Me – has it opened doors for you, and changed your world? In what way?

Being published has opened doors for me that I never dreamed possible. I’ve taught classes to retailers at both HIA and ACCI. I’ve taught consumer classes all over the US, and gave a keynote presentation to 1450 people. I wrote and am teaching classes at BarnesandNobleUniversity.com and WritersWorkshopsOnline.com, where I wouldn’t have necessarily thought myself “qualified” before I wrote my books. I’ve met and talked to hundreds of interesting people with fascinating stories, people that tell me I’ve inspired them to tell their tales. I spread the important message of having the courage to believe in your own stories; I am able to be a “cheerleader” for people I haven’t even met yet. Having a book published opens these kinds of doors to you, and allows you to dream of even more projects and possibilities. I love my job!

There are so many classes, magazine articles and day to day usages of “Book of Me”, BOM or Me-Albums nowadays, and you possibly aren’t receiving a lot of money from being the originator of the whole concept. Do you ever regret sharing the inspiration which the Book of Me provides so openly?

In this cyber-age, people can share ideas with the click of a button, often with just the comment, “Look what I saw online today!” I know I have received information, but have no idea where it originated, or who came up with the concept. I also know people surf online, looking for ideas to create a class, eventually compiling one inspired by bits of concepts pulled from all over, but they may not remember where the ideas actually came from. I’ve talked to so many people who’ve never heard of me or my books, but are familiar with the idea of scrapbooking about oneself. It’s often a humbling moment for me, but it never makes me regret having shared my ideas. When I struggle with a sense of lack of recognition, I remind myself that the whole point of the book is to inspire and encourage people to scrapbook about themselves. People are doing just that, and more start every day. That means the book has been a success, and I have accomplished what I set out to do.

The BOM series is now advancing with the publication of Growing up Me last year, and now the newest latest addition, the Book of Us. The Book of Us is much anticipated in the scrapbooking world. How much work was involved, and can you tell us a bit about its production?

Writing a book is every bit as hard as you’ve probably heard. Sometimes I feel like if I could just take my brain out of my head, and wring it a bit, the ideas might flow more easily. Now that I’ve written my third book, I do have a system of sorts in place. It takes me about 8-10 months to complete each book. Each of the books follows the same format, so I have chapter outlines already set up, and I start researching information, and filling them in. Early in the process, I make a Word file for each chapter, and just add information as I find it. I jot down ideas, prompts, and concepts in a notebook I keep close, then use those notes when I sit down to write the chapter.

A separate part of the book project is getting the layouts. Based on my notes, and what I want to accomplish with each chapter, I put together a list of potential layout topics, then put out a Call for Submissions on my website. The response has varied each time. For The Book of ME, I asked for layouts, but had to go to online layout galleries and ask for each one I included. For Growing Up ME, I received probably 100 submissions, and then supplemented with layouts I requested from galleries. For The Book of US, I received just under 600 submissions for my Call for Pages. I was floored. Sifting through each of those projects was a logistical nightmare; I have no idea how all the magazines keep their submissions straight! Of course, for my project, it’s just me and my inbox! It took me about six weeks to wade through everything and make final decisions.

My publisher came into town and we discussed all everything would work together. When I finish with the manuscript, which includes the chapters and the layout captions, I email the Word files to my publisher, and ship the layouts to her via postal mail. She handles it from there – photographing the layouts, setting up page and cover design, proofreading & editing, and all the other production details. We keep in touch at each point, and bounce ideas off each other. We work very well together. About two months after she receives the manuscript, she sends me the Galley Proofs. These are printouts of what each page in the book will look like. I look those over for errors and typos, then send me my revisions. Within one to two months, the books are printed and distributed to the various retail venues. The whole process is about a year from the time I start writing to the time the book is done printing.

Tell us about The Book of Us. Will every scrapbooker get something out of it?

I think every scrapper will get something out of The Book of US. It’s basically about scrapbooking about relationships, no matter with whom you have a relationship: friends, family, spouse, social groups, etc. So it doesn’t matter if you’re married or not, a mother or not, a sister or not, or even male or female. You don’t even have to be a subject in a Book of US you complete – the ideas in the book can be applied to your relationships, or ones you observe from afar. The first Book of US I did was about my husband and his best friend. The main idea of the book is to take the time to document the relationships in your life in a scrapbook, to illustrate and preserve the support and balance two people offer each other.

After three in The Book of …Series, what’s next? Are there any forthcoming developments you can share with our readers?

We’re investigating doing a 2nd edition of The Book of Me. When it was first published, it was hard to find examples of people scrapbooking about themselves. Now there are so many more examples that we’d like to be able to feature them, as well as all the resources now available.

What is a normal day for you like? Do you actually find any time to scrapbook?

What is my life like now? I am now a work-at-home-mom, spending my days (and late nights!) working on book and website stuff. I answer hundreds of emails, fill orders for my books, spend a lot of time at the post office, brainstorm promotional opportunities, moderate my online classes, write content for my newsletter, and work on new projects as they come my way. I sometimes travel to teach classes at expos and local scrapbooking stores. And sometimes manage to throw in a load of laundry and do the dishes. Other than class projects and book promotion, I scrap maybe once a month with girlfriends. Other than that, I just collect the supplies!

Thank you Angie, for the opportunity and pleasure of meeting you in print-life. We all are really looking forward to your latest publication and your future endeavours.
